About Me
Welcome to my academic website. I am a Full Professor in the School of Computing and Information Systems
within the Faculty of Science and Technology at Athabasca University of Canada.
I have been honored with the Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision (AEGSS) in 2025 from Athabasca University, as well as the Craig Cunningham Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence (CCMATE) in 2012, also from Athabasca University.
I have served in various academic leadership roles, including Associate Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Graduate Program Director for the MSc Information Systems program, and Chair of the School of Computing and Information Systems at Athabasca University.
My research interests primarily focus on intelligent systems, adaptive learning, and virtual reality (VR).
I have published over 170 papers and book chapters, and have contributed as a General Chair, a Program Chair, and a (Senior) Program Committee member for numerous prestigious international conferences.
I earned my PhD in the areas of Virtual Reality from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 1998. I am a senior member of both the ACM (Special Interest Group on Applied Computing) and IEEE (Computer Society; Computational Intelligence and Systems Society; Man, and Cybernetics Society).
Prior to joining Athabasca University in 2000, I was a Research Officer at the National Research Council of Canada’s Institute of Information Technology and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Intelligent Systems at the University of Calgary.
I am leading Intelligent Educational Systems Research Group and
Intelligent Systems and Machine Learning (ISML)
Research Cluster.
